Description
The Plaza Nueva Square is located in the old quarter of Bilbao, near the Arriaga Theatre. This neo-classical square with arcades was built in the middle of the 19th c. and it has sixty-four arches based on Dorian columns, which support three floors, mainly apartments. Due to these characteristics, the plaza is reminiscent of a typical square with arcades from Castilla.
The Plaza Nueva Square is one of the busiest places in Bilbao, since every Sunday its arcades host street markets where you can find stamps, flowers, and animals... as well as the traditional Christmas market.
It is moreover one of the main scenes during the "Aste Nagusia", the Big Week, when Bilbao celebrates its festivals. Every day during this week the square host concerts and many amusing activities.
The square is full of charming shops and bars, ideal for the practice of the typical "poteo" or to taste the famous Basque "pintxos".
Setting and atmosphere: daily life, busy, traditional, social activity. Historic setting.
