Description
Compared to the common underground train, the Metro Bilbao tube is characterised by its differences. Space and light prevails. Far from the claustrophobia sensation in other underground trains, the Metro Bilbao is remarkable for its spaciousness and its original and brilliant architectural bet. Metro Bilbao tube is one of the few tubes citizens approach just to admire it.
Norman Foster designed the metro and used material such as iron, glass, and concrete to develop an urban, wide and comfortable design.
The different tube entrances are one of the most outstanding aspects of the Metro Bilbao. They are called "Fosteritos" in honour of its designer.
The tube has been awarded several prizes among which the Premio Brunel to the Sarriko station in 1998 stands out. That station replaced the "Fosterito" with a big glazed shelter that provides the whole station with natural light. There is a unique and long stretch of escalators to descend from the street level, which gives a spectacular nature to this station.
The big capacity of the station, the light bathing the platforms, the metal colour of the iron, and the glazed shelter of the station give the visitor the sensation of being inside of a giant spaceship, where modern elements flood and expand throughout the large room.
It should be noted that the Metro Bilbao has been home to many shootings, both feature films and advertisements. The tube offers numerous possibilities with excellent results.
