Description
Bizkaia's Provincial Library is one of the most important ones in the Basque Country. Located in the current building since 1929, it forms a harmonic complex along with the Regional Council Palace of Bizkaia, within a smart and attractive architectural setting. The library, as well as the palace, is of a classical nature and in its interior its noble halls stand out.
Nowadays an ambitious remodelling is taking place, to turn the building into a 21st century modern construction. The objective is to create a singular building that fully adapts to the urban idea of the city, where the most modern style combines with the traditional.
Materials such as glass and stone will be used in its construction, which will contribute to reaching a major lightness and flexibility.
The project envisages the possibility of creating three blocks, among which the so-called "Contenedor de libros" (Book Container) stands out. As a double-skin container, it will offer a changing image during the day and night by means of a special glass created for this project. During the day, the container will present an image that will give more importance to the reflection of the Provincial Library. At night a special light system will turn the books into the prominent figures.
The conception of this space is based on transparency, the light on the floors, the flexibility and the visual connection between the building spaces that receive the light.
Setting: Modern age and Classicism blending due to its external appearance (avant-garde) and interior rooms (classical).
